Still Spring Cleaning? DIY Mail Organizer

I have inherited a knack for making piles. Yup, I'm one of those people. I get this from both my mom and dad. Notorious pilers. Last fall, my mom had been saying she wanted to try to find a 'mail center' for her kitchen for a while, but never found one that fit her space right, looked the way she wanted or wasn't too spendy.

A little bit before Christmas rolled around, I came across this tutorial from Noodlehead. So, I gave it a shot, with the intention of giving it to her for Christmas, but didn't quite finish it until just before the new year rolled around.

This was one of the first projects I realized I had to set aside my tastes in fabric selection and really consider my mom's kitchen and taste: cool colors, simple designs, no floral. I ended up using home decor fabric because it fit my mom, but is not requried.

I would really like to make another one for myself. For anyone planning on using Noodlehead's tutorial on this project, I would suggest making the fabric sides that are intended to wrap onto the back of the board, extra long because one side of mine was just barely too short. I was worried that since it wasn't able to wrap around to the back and be stapled on, it wouldn't hold much weight. Thankfully, as shown in the top picture, the slots still are able to hold quite a bit.

I love how it turned out and my mom does too. Hopefully, I will be able to make one for myself soon, in a fabric that is a little more eye-popping!

  2. This looks great. I am a huge piler too. I can't shove it all in a desk drawer because then I won't see it and get to it! And so it sits and sits in a pile. Thanks for showing this great idea!!
