Baa Baa White Sheep Cupcakes

I am a sucker for nearly any and all cupcakes. I love cake. I love frosting. And I love when cupcakes are little works of art. That being said, it was so nice to get to spend some time this past weekend at my amazing friend Michelle's house, who is always down to try a new cupcake creation. (Her blog is called The One With the Cupcakes.) More often than not, we have quite grandiose plans for our time together. This weekend was no different and one of the many things on our list was to make these little lambies.

I saved this post from Southern Living magazine online after a friend posted it on Facebook. When I shared it with Michelle, she had the brilliant idea to make the lambs as shown in the article, into cupcakes. I had no objections. It is so hard to resist the slightly comic, bewildered face of these little guys.

To copy our adaptation of these treats turned cupcakes, you will only need the following:

1. Cupcakes, 24

2. White Cupcake Liners, 24

3. White Candy Melts, 1 bag (you will not use them all, so if you have at least half a bag lying around, you should be fine)

4. Miniature Marshmellows, 1 bag

5. Pepperidge Farm Milano Cookies, 2 bags

6. Miniature Chocolate Chips, heaping handful

7. Any White Frosting, 1-2 cups

8. Toothpicks (helpful in assembling the lamb faces)

We were unable to find the Black and White Milano cookies, so we only were able to make white sheep. Hopefully next time, we can find the black cookies. The rhyme does go, "Baa baa black sheep, have you any wool?"

First, we baked our cupcakes and let them cool. Then, as we frosted each cupcake, we also added all the marshmallows, as wonky as you wish so the lambs do not appear to well groomed of course. Do not frost all the cupcakes at once, then add the marshmallows, as the frosting will dry just enough so that the marshmallows will not stick.

To create the lamb faces, we used the melted white candy chips to secure mini chocolate chips to the mini marshmallows, then the marshmallows to the Milano cookie. This can be made easier by using a toothpick to dab the melted candies onto each surface. If you decide not to use candy melts and try to use frosting, your sheep will look as if they have glaucoma as the frosting does not dry as almost clear as the candy melts do.

After flattening two mini marshmallows, then pinching the ends together to make the ears as described in the original article, you attach them to the head with the melted candies. It is helpful to allow the melted candy to harden a little bit before placing the head onto the cupcake body. Finally, using a spoon, glop a bit of the melted candy onto the back of the Milano cookie, or cover a few marshmallows on the body, and attach the head and body (cookie to cupcake).

We just loved these little lambies and thought about creating a miniature Bo Peep cake with a flock of these adorable lambs around her. How cute would that be? Add another thing to the list.
